The ENERGY STAR program is jointly monitored by the US EPA and the US Department of Energy to help protect the environment through greater enery efficiency. Manufacturing partners who wish to sell to the US federal government must meet both ENERGY STAR and EPEAT requirements. The Environmental Policy Act of 2005 requires the federal government to purchase ENERGY STAR qualified computers.
Energy consumption by computers and monitors costs organizations, including educational institutes, about $1.5 billion every year. Computers and monitors in a typical university consume more energy than all other forms of office equipment combined. ENERGY STAR requirements help educational institutes reduce energy waste by creating power management awareness.

As of January 2009, all federal government agencies received an Executive Order requiring to purchase EPEAT (Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool) certified products. EPEAT simplifies the process of purchasing environmentally friendly products by informing purchasers of environmental criteria for electronic products and by making available a searchable database of all EPEAT-registered products. Of the 22 federal agencies, 13 have reportedly made the switch to purchase EPEAT conforming computers, monitors, laptops and other electronics.
